Journeys

During this class we were able to discuss the various types of journeys and how we go through each one. Everyone goes through different journeys and these are the ones that shape who we are and who we will become. There can be inner journeys as well as external journeys.

Inner journey can be reflected as journeys that happen internally, it could be mentally or spiritually. This journey can involve going through a lot of different emotions because of a certain event, goals that are in your mind or having changes in your spiritual life, your emotions, and your mentality. These journeys happen all the time and have a great effect on our lives. Inner journeys usually help us grow and mature. I learned that these journeys can change who we are on the inside and as we continue to experience them, our point of views and opinions might change. These changes can be for the best because as humans, we need to develop and change to face the different challenges that might get thrown at us.

An inner journey I went through was deciding what I wanted to study. At the time, I didn’t know that this was an inner journey that was happening because I didn’t think of it that way. As time went on, I realized that this journey helped me in the process of feeling uncertain. I went through a lot of emotions such as confusion and feeling afraid because of how dubious I was. After doing some research and with the help of my family and friends, I realized that I wanted to become a psychologist. This inner journey was extremely important to me because it was what would determine who I was going to be.

Another internal journey that I went through was Hurricane María. The interesting thing about internal journeys is that they’re all different for each individual yet when it comes to a huge event, everyone can experience similar emotions. María made us go through fear, anxiety, desperation, and frustration. No one had gone through a huge disaster like that and it took a huge stress on everyone. I remember feeling very uneasy the night before, I couldn’t sleep and hearing the wind become stronger scared me a lot. The next few weeks were filled with desperation, going through hours just to find diesel, and coming back empty handed made everyone feel defeated. As the months passed, the emotions went from desperation to happiness when the power came back, and everything seemed “normal” again. This is how I felt, yet I can only imagine how the people that still don’t have power are feeling. During life we’re all going to have different inner journeys, whether they are small or big and they’ll shape who we will become. It is up to us to take these journeys and apply them to our life in a positive way.

An external journey is the places, trips, or destinations that we will experience in life. I’ve had a couple of external journeys and I can’t wait to have more. One place that I love to visit is California, because my cousins live there.  I first visited California when I was seven years old, it was my first time going to Disneyland and it was a magical day. I remember feeling so excited to meet my favorite princesses and go on the rides. This experience is one that I often think about when I’m having a tough day. Another external journey was my trip to San Francisco. My parents, sister and I drove from LAX to San Francisco and got to see the beautiful scenery. We explored the bay area and took pictures in the Golden Gate Bridge. I also went to Honduras when I was five, visited Florida, Washington D.C., and New York. All these adventures have made me realize that I never want to stop traveling. These journeys opened my eyes to new experiences that help me grow as a human being. These external journeys help us learn about new culture, educate ourselves and discover new places. By having these journeys, we can fall in love with different places and admire countries that are different from ours. Whether it’s a physical or emotional journey, they both have a great impact on who we are, and we will continue to experience them for the rest of our lives.
